  Happy Birthday!

When I first thought of Bali, I always imagined a shabby touristic spot fillled with drunk teenagers and surfers who lacked good conversation. When Gala invited me to join her there for her birthday everything changed: I discovered paradise! There are still some areas which are crammed with tourists, but as Gala had been there before she knew where to take us and showed us the best corners of Bali. I fell in love with the island and its people, so we decided to go back this year. The Balinese are incredible people. I have learnt a lot from them having been a witness to their patience, their joy and their smile. Sometimes I felt like this stressed western european and I even felt embarrassed thinking how anxiously we behave in Europe: never stopping to relax… never pausing to think. They live by this and it is truly amazing. Another thing I loved about Bali was the temperature, the warm air… It’s such a pleasure to feel that warm breeze as you drive your motorbike. Going up and down the green hills of the jungle, going to the beach and having to walk a good amount only to reach the sand and have a swim in the clear water. When we arrived we went to a small town near Canggu where our villa was Villa Matisse. I can honestly say it is the perfect place to relax: beautiful and welcoming surrounded by endless rice fields, majestic temples and with not a tourist on site. We stayed there a couple of days trying not to burn our pale bodies after so many months hibernating in the cold winter. Despite the heavily frequent applications of high SPF and our hats we didn’t manage to save our skin from the sun. We then went back to a surfer area and to our favourite huts, Toraja Bambu. This location is where you will find many parties, watching the sunset as you dance. As always we met some incredible people and made good friendsall. We could have made a reality show with all the laughing and quarreling. We spent our last days in Ubud. We ran into a festival filled with yogis and people meditating. Our friend Falkwyn, half spanish half balinese, took us to a sacred waterfall with some locals where we did some rituals. It was a very special experience. We met Emanuella, an italian who had set up a “glamping”, luxury accomodation inside a tent., where we felt at ease (Glamping Sandat). I still have island to discover, so I guess it's just a “see you soon Bali”! .
